IB MYP ENGLISH 1,2 #

English 1/2 prepares students to engage in an array of classic and contemporary works in text, video, audio, and other multimedia formats. Students develop the skills and knowledge to become critical readers and writers by analyzing key ideas and details, craft, and structure. Students develop their writing skills by examining various text types, structures, and purposes and by crafting arguments, explanatory/informational texts, and narratives. Students learn to produce and distribute quality writing using technology.

Students conduct research, participate in a range of collaborative discussions, and integrate multiple sources of information. This course advances students’ knowledge of the conventions of Standard English and


strengthens vocabulary acquisition and use.

IB MYP ENGLISH 1,2 HONORS  #

Course Length: 2 Semesters                Grade Level: 9

Credit per Semester: 1.0 (English)

Prerequisite: None

English Honors 1/2 prepares students to engage in an array of classic and contemporary works in text, video, audio, and other multimedia formats. Students develop the skills and knowledge to become critical readers and writers by analyzing key ideas and details, craft, and structure. At this level, reading selections of literature and literary nonfiction will be at the high end of the grades 9–10 text complexity band. Students develop their writing skills by examining various text types, structures, and purposes and by crafting arguments, explanatory/informational texts, and narratives. Students learn to produce and distribute quality writing using technology. Students conduct research, participate in a range of collaborative discussions, and integrate multiple sources of information. This course advances students’ knowledge of the conventions of Standard English and strengthens vocabulary acquisition and use. Higher-level thinking skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation; group and individual oral activities; in- and out-of-class writing requiring detailed analysis; and reading of different genres from around the world help prepare students to succeed in Higher Level Language A or Advanced Placement coursework.


IB MYP ENGLISH 3,4 #

Prerequisite: Recommended IB MYP English 1,2

English 3/4 prepares students to engage in an increasingly complex array of classic and contemporary literature and informational texts. Students expand the skills and knowledge of English 1/2 to become critical readers and writers by analyzing key ideas and details, craft, and structure. Students develop their writing skills by examining text types and purposes and writing more sophisticated arguments, explanatory/informational texts, and narratives. Students use technology to produce and distribute quality writing. Students conduct research, participate in a range of collaborative discussions, and integrate multiple sources of information.

This course advances students’ knowledge of the conventions of Standard English, strengthens vocabulary acquisition and use, and prepares students for real life communications.


IB MYP ENGLISH 3,4 HONORS #

Course Length: 2 Semesters                Grade Level: 10

Prerequisite: IB MYP English 1, 2 w/teacher recommendation or IB MYP English 1,2 Honors

English Honors 3/4 prepares students to engage in an increasingly complex array of classic and contemporary literature and informational texts. Students expand the skills and knowledge of English 1/2 to become critical readers and writers by analyzing key ideas and details, craft, and structure. At this level, reading selections of literature and literary nonfiction will be at the high end of the grades 10-11 text complexity band. Students develop their writing skills by examining text types and purposes and writing more sophisticated arguments, explanatory/informational texts, and narratives. Students use technology to produce and distribute quality writing. Students conduct research, participate in a range of collaborative discussions, and integrate multiple sources of information. This course advances students’ knowledge of the conventions of Standard English, strengthens vocabulary acquisition and use, and prepares students for real life communications. This course is for highly- motivated, capable students willing to study a broad sampling of literary materials with emphasis on conceptual and critical skills in reading, writing, and discussion. The sequence is designed to provide both instruction in higher-level skills and the opportunity to take Higher Level Language A or Advanced Placement courses in the junior and senior years. Summer reading may be required.


ENGLISH 5,6 #

Prerequisite: Recommended IB MYP English 1-4

English 5/6 prepares students to engage in an array of classic and contemporary works in text, video, audio, and other multimedia formats. Students develop skills and knowledge to become critical readers and writers by analyzing key ideas and details, craft, and structure. This course integrates literature and informational text. Students explore literary criticism with a focus on American literature. Students develop their writing skills by examining various text types, purposes, and rhetorical structures and by crafting arguments, explanatory/informational texts, and narratives. Students use technology to produce, publish, and share quality writing.

Students conduct research projects, participate in a range of collaborative discussions, integrate multiple sources of information, and develop style and voice. This course advances students’ knowledge of the conventions of Standard English, strengthens vocabulary acquisition and use, and prepares students for real life communications.


ENGLISH 7 - COMPOSITION #

Course Length: 1 Semester                  Grade Level: 12

Credit per Semester: 1.0 (English)

Prerequisite: Recommended IB MYP English 1-6

English 7/8 prepares students to engage in an array of classic and contemporary works in text, video, audio, and other multimedia formats. Students develop skills and knowledge to become critical readers and writers by analyzing key ideas and details, craft, and structure. This course integrates literature and informational text focusing on exploration of issues relevant to students’ lives as adults and productive citizens. Students examine text types and purposes by reading and writing arguments, explanatory/informational texts, and narratives. Students use technology to produce, publish, and share quality writing products. Students conduct a research-based capstone project. They also participate in a range of collaborative discussions integrating multiple sources of information.

Students apply knowledge of the conventions of Standard English and strengthen vocabulary acquisition and use. These skills prepare students for real life communications in college and in 21st century careers. The course is required for all graduates not taking IB English.


ENGLISH 8 - LITERATURE #

Course Length: 1 semester

Credit per Semester: 1.0 (English)

Prerequisite: Recommended IB MYP English 1-6

English 7/8 prepares students to engage in an array of classic and contemporary works in text, video, audio, and other multimedia formats. Students develop skills and knowledge to become critical readers and writers by analyzing key ideas and details, craft, and structure. This course integrates literature and informational text focusing on exploration of issues relevant to students’ lives as adults and productive citizens. IB LANGUAGE & LITERATURE 5, 6, 7, 8 (ENGLISH) STANDARD LEVEL (SL) #

IB assessments (internal and external) are a requirement for this course.

Course Length: 4 Semesters                Grade Level: 11, 12

Credit per Semester: 1.0 (English)

Prerequisite: None

Part of the International Baccalaureate Program. This four semester study of global literature (including works in translation) focuses primarily on the development of solid analytics skills as demonstrated in essays of literacy criticism and in various oral presentations. Students may encounter literature (both full texts and bodies of work) from many diverse regions and cultures, including Latin America, Africa, Asia, and North America. A certain number of written and oral assignments throughout the two-year course are externally evaluation by the IB Examination Office to ensure that students meet the assessment criteria mandated by the Program. Expectations concerning workload are generally equivalent to Junior and Senior Level English courses.


IB LANGUAGE & LITERATURE 5, 6, 7, 8 (ENGLISH) HIGHER LEVEL (HL)  #

IB assessments (internal and external) are a requirement for this course.

Course Length: 4 Semesters                Grade Level: 11, 12

Prerequisite: IB MYP English 1,2,3,4 Honors

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) READING 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

Course Length: 2 Semesters per year        Grade Level: 9-12

Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities)

Prerequisite: Instructor evaluation, taken concurrently with English class

This course is designed to give students individualized help with basic reading skills. Students will work to improve in areas of vocabulary, reading comprehension and study skills.


ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) NEWCOMER 1,2

Course Length: 2 Semesters                       Grade Level: 9-12

Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Elective)

Prerequisite: Instructor evaluation, taken concurrently with ESL Reading 1,2

Designed for speakers who arrive at Palmer with no English proficiency. This class provides additional support for generating basic English skills in conjunction with introductory ESL English and Reading classes.
