Art Courses

ART CLASSES

There is considerable research on the academic value of students receiving instruction in the Visual Arts. Students will learn the elements of art and principles of design. They will learn about art in relation to history, culture, and the community. They will also recognize and use the visual arts as a form of communication, and critique works of art through analysis, assessment, and evaluation.

Note: Some art courses offer Postsecondary Workforce Readiness credits and/or articulated college credit through Pikes Peak Community College or CU succeed courses offering college credit through UCCS.

IBMYP ART 1,2

Course Length: 1 Semester each
Grade Level: 9-12
Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities, Elective)
Prerequisite: None

In these courses, you will learn the rules of art to unlock the mysteries. Discover what works as you explore a variety of media: drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and/or ceramics. In keeping with the IB Middle Years Program framework's requirements, this course has students connecting classroom learning and real-world experiences.


IBMYP ART AND DESIGN

Course Length: 1 Semester
Grade Level: 9,10
Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities, Elective - Honors)
Prerequisite: None

IBMYP Art & Design provides students with opportunities to develop the ability to express themselves and their ideas about the world they live in, working both independently and as cooperative members of a group. Explore a variety of media while making connections. What inspires you? Develop your skills and become prepared to pursue IB HL or SL Art. A process sketchbook records your development, investigations, and shows a record of your creative process.


GENERAL ART 3H and 4H

Course Length: 1 Semester each
Grade Level: 10-12
Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities, Elective)
Prerequisite: IBMYP Art 2 or IBMYP Art and Design

Art 3H and 4H are honors level art courses that require the artist to investigate and demonstrate the development of new skills and techniques. The main goal is to improve technical competence with a variety of media. Media may include drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture.


DRAWING FOR ILLUSTRATORS 1,2

Course Length: 2 Semesters
Grade Level: 9-12
Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities, Elective or Postsecondary Workforce Readiness)
Prerequisite: None

Covers fundamental skills and theories of drawing and rendering line structure, form, value, texture, and composition. Application of drawing skills with various media for line quality as well as value and texture interpretations are also covered.

NOTE: THIS COURSE WILL ARTICULATE WITH PPSC MGD 1034: Drawing for Illustrators upon completion of Drawing for Illustrators 1 and 2


CERAMICS 1,2

Course Length: 1 Semester each
Grade Level: 9-12
Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities, Elective)
Prerequisite: None

Experience hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. After taking Art 1 you will be able to design and plan your creative ceramic forms. The primary emphasis is on studio work leading to a portfolio of finished pieces by the end of the semester. This course's main goal is that you will be able to create and appreciate expressive, beautiful three-dimensional clay forms.


IBMYP DIGITAL PHOTO DESIGN 1,2

Digital camera recommended.

Course Length: 1 Semester each

Prerequisite: None

These courses introduce students to photography through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, assignments, and critiques. Students will learn to see photographically via an exploration of the basic tools, techniques and aesthetics of photography, with an emphasis on the creative use of camera controls, exposure, an overview of film and digital processing, and an awareness of the critical issues in contemporary photography.

NOTE: THIS COURSE WILL ARTICULATE WITH PPSC PHO120: Fundamentals of Photography upon completion of IBMYP Digital Photo Design 1 and 2


DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY 3,4H

Digital camera required

Course Length: 1 Semester each
Grade Level: 10-12
Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities)
Prerequisite: Digital Photo Design 2

Enter the world of commercial photographers. Gain mastery over your digital SLR and begin building your photography portfolio. Concentrate on the commercial aspects that the working photographer faces daily which include portraiture, landscapes, and photojournalism to name a few. Focus on a genre and demonstrate your skills through a portfolio you produce. Introduction to marketing work.


IBMYP ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR 1,2

Course Length: 2 semesters
Grade Level: 11-12
Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities, Computer Ed/Tech or Postsecondary Workforce Readiness)
Prerequisite: None

Concentrates on the high-end capabilities of Adobe Illustrator as an illustration, design and vector drawing tools. Students learn how to use the tools to create digital artwork used in web design, print media, and digital screen design. Course competencies and outline follow those set by the Adobe certified Associate exam in Visual Communication using Adobe Illustrator.

NOTE: THIS COURSE WILL ARTICULATE WITH PPSC MGD112: Adobe Illustrator I upon completion of IBMYP Adobe Illustrator 1 and 2


IBMYP ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 1,2

Course Length: 2 semesters
Grade Level: 11-12
Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities, Computer Ed/Tech, or Postsecondary Workforce Readiness)
Prerequisite: none

Concentrates on the high-end capabilities of Adobe Photoshop as an illustration, design and photo retouching tools. Students explore a wide range of selection and manipulation techniques applied to photos, graphics and videos. Course competencies and outline follow those set out by the Adobe Certified Associate exam in Visual Communication Using Adobe Photoshop.

NOTE: THIS COURSE WILL ARTICULATE WITH PPSC MGD111: Adobe Photoshop I upon completion of IBMYP Adobe Photoshop 1 and 2 and Industry Certificate


IB ART DESIGN 5,6 STANDARD LEVEL

Prerequisite: Completion of IBMYP Art and Design or teacher approval

The visual arts course encourages students to challenge their own creative and cultural expectations and boundaries. Create a portfolio of work that will be presented in an exhibition. Keep a record of your journey in a Process Sketchbook as you develop skills and make connections to others. The ability to use analytical skills in problem-solving while working towards technical proficiency as an artist is the goal. Designed for students who want to further study visual arts in higher education and for those seeking lifelong enrichment through visual arts.


IB ART DESIGN 5,6,7,8 HIGHER LEVEL

Course Length: 4 Semesters
Grade Level: 11, 12
Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities)
Prerequisite: Completion of IBMYP Art and Design or teacher approval

A 2-year visual arts course encourages students to challenge their own creative and cultural expectations and boundaries. Create a portfolio of work that will be presented in an exhibition. Keep a record of your journey in a Process Sketchbook as you develop skills and make connections to others. The ability to use analytical skills in problem-solving while working towards technical proficiency as an artist is the goal. Designed for students who want to further study visual arts in higher education and for those seeking lifelong enrichment through visual arts.


AP STUDIO ART 1,2

Course Length: 2 Semesters
Grade Level: 11-12
Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Humanities, Elective)
Prerequisite: Completion of previous art courses or teacher approval

Studio Art AP is an honors course designed for students with exceptional ability and a high degree of interest in the practice of art. Students submit a portfolio of work to examiners in May to qualify for credit and advanced placement in American colleges. Work with any medium and create a portfolio of work based on your Inquiry Statement.
