FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES CLASSES
The one Postsecondary Workforce Readiness credit required by District 11 for graduation may be fulfilled by any of the classes in the Family & Consumer Science department.
CULINARY ESSENTIALS 1
Course Length: 1 Semester
Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite: None
This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of culinary skills and food preparation. Through instruction and culinary lab practice, this class will provide an opportunity for students to learn food prep and demonstrate food safety.
Some topics include culinary skills and preparation of items such as quick breads, yeast breads, and eggs; meal and menu planning; nutrition; and food borne illnesses. Students will be able to demonstrate the correct procedures and techniques in introductory culinary labs, analyze nutritional guidelines and plan menus that are nutritionally balanced, and demonstrate food safety.
CULINARY ARTS 1 and 2

Prerequisite: Culinary Essentials 1
Culinary Arts develops lifelong, skilled individuals with an understanding of cooking practices and techniques. This course offers opportunities to improve food preparation skills, strengthen practical critical decision making and explore culinary choices. Emphasis is placed on working effectively and efficiently in a kitchen, practicing essential cooking techniques and developing culinary skills for everyday use.
CATERING 1 and 2
Course Length: 2 Semesters
Grade Level: 11-12
Credit per Semester: 1.0 (Postsecondary Workforce Readiness)
Prerequisite: Culinary Arts 1,2 or Teacher Approval
This two-semester program is designed for students with career interests in the food industry as well as owning their own catering business. The purpose of this course is to develop skills in quantity food preparation, safety and sanitation, planning, customer service, business plans and entrepreneurship.
CHILD AND ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT
Course Length: 1 Semester

Prerequisite: None
This class is designed to help students become effective future parents. Students will understand the responsibilities of parenthood and practice techniques for nurturing productive, caring children. Through a variety of classroom activities including discussions, individual and group interaction projects, guest speakers, and visual aids, students will learn skills for caring for children as well as the importance of self-care and caring for the community.
